Day 1, Week 2: Remaining editors still in limbo | Two more news outlets cover dismissals |
By Chuck Bahr, former News Editor
As the first day of the second business week following Northern Light dismissals comes to a close, three remaining editors expected to be dismissed this week remain in limbo about their jobs.
Sports Editor Sarah Abbott, Opinion Editor David Kingsbury and Photography Editor Andre Triplett all said they heard nothing new Monday from North Central administration. All three signed the editorial staff's letter to administration saying they would not agree to continue publishing the newspaper until administration relinquished its censorship demands.
Administration on Thursday dismissed News Editor Chuck Bahr and Editor-in-Chief Hope Bahr from their positions for "refus[ing] to publish" and then announced plans to replace dismissed editors and continue publishing this semester.
Since the three remaining editors have all stated they will not publish unless the demands are changed, Northern Light editorial staff assumes they will be dismissed or forced to step down sometime this week. However, Abbott and Kingsbury said Northern Light adviser Reuben David has persisted in asking them to come to a Tuesday, April 11, meeting that was scheduled for the purpose of establishing a new staff.
But unless administration changes its demands, it appears unfeasible that any of the three editors will join the new staff.
Two more news outlets cover dismissals
Two additional news outlets contacted Northern Light staff Monday, stating plans to cover dismissals in their respective publications.
Inside Higher Ed, described as "the online source for news, opinion and career advice and services for all of higher education," and the Student Press Law Center will run articles sometime this week.
